WILD DOLLS AUDITIONS AT 3. CAVE WEST.
“Wild Dolls?” Brian asked.
“They’re a local band,” Jennifer shrugged. “Some people really like them. Anyway, their pianist quit awhile ago. They’ve been trying to find someone new for months, but they haven’t been able to.”
“Do you have any other information you can tell us about that?” Piper asked carefully. If Allison had gone to an audition to play piano in a band, maybe one of the other missing women had gone to the same audition. Could that be the link they were looking for? It seemed too easy, somehow, and she knew that it wouldn’t be as simple as all of that, but she needed to know.
“I don’t really remember too much,” Jennifer said. “You think it’s important?”
“Maybe,” Brian said honestly. “So anything you tell us could really help. We want to find Allison, Jennifer. We’re doing everything we can to find her. If you can tell us anything about the audition that might be important, or even anything you think isn’t important, that would be very helpful to us.”
Leave it to Brian to sound so professional and on top of things.
Leave it to Brian to give them all a little bit of hope.
Jennifer looked like she was thinking, and for the first time since they’d shown up, she started to look a little less dead and a little more alive. That was the problem with living once you’d lost someone. Sometimes it was hard to do even the most basic of tasks. Sometimes even breathing seemed like a chore when you were missing someone, but now Jennifer seemed to realize that she might be able to make a difference.
She might be able to help them find her roommate.
“She said the audition went well,” Jennifer said slowly. “She said she felt like she performed.”
“But?”
“But the band told her they just didn’t know if she’d be a good fit,” Jennifer said. “Apparently the guy they’d lost was ‘totally irreplaceable.’ Their words.”
Brian and Piper looked at each other, exchanging a knowing glance.
“Thanks,” Piper finally said, standing up. “That’s really helpful.”
“Really,” Brian said. He pulled a twenty out of his wallet and dropped it on the table. “Let us buy your lunch. It’s the least we can do.”
“Thanks,” Jennifer said. “That wasn’t really necessary.”
“If you think of anything else,” Piper pulled out a card and handed it to her. “Call us. Anytime. I mean that.”
Then they walked out of the bar, and they got into the car.
